Murray Cup 2016
This year our schools co-ordinator, Leanne O Neill, has been operating a very successful schools programme. Every week students from UCC ultimate travel to various schools throughout the city and county to teach ultimate frisbee to the younger generation. This year, the schools programme was so successful that Leanne decided to run her very own tournament entitled ‘The Murray Cup’. The tournament is named after UCC alumnus, Donal Murray and is a tribute the the work he has put into the growth of Ultimate in Cork secondary schools. As such, ‘The Murray Cup’ is a celebration and showcase of the talent within Cork schools Ultimate. This year the tournament was held in the Mardyke arena on the 27th of January and it turned out to be a huge success.
A total of 12 teams in the open division and 6 teams in the ladies division turned up for the tournament. Participating schools included: Gaelcholáiste Mhuire, A.G. Bandon Grammar BCS Colaiste Cholim Davis College Maria Immaculata Community College Presentation Brothers College Regina Mundi College Scoil Mhuire Gan Smál St. Mary’s, Macroom After a long and enjoyable day it’s was Colaiste Choilm who emerged as eventual winners in the open division and Regina Mundi College took home the gold in the ladies division. All of us here in UCC Ultimate were overwhelmed with the success of the tournament and it was great to see such talent amongst the younger generation of ultimate players in cork. Cleanerio
We commend Leanne for all the hard work she has done promoting ultimate in cork schools and we wish the tournament ongoing success in the years to come.
