UCC Win Ladies Outdoor IVs for the Fifth Year in a Row

This past weekend UCC ladies sent one team (and a few beginners on the pick up team) to UCD for the last College event of the year, Ladies Outdoor Inter Varsities. The early 9am start meant the team traveled up Friday evening and availed of the hosting offered by UCD. After a quick radio interview on 2fm the excitement for this year IVs was beginning to build.

The team arrived to the pitches nice and early Saturday morning to make the most of the sun. The weather could not have been better for playing Ultimate (unless we were in Cork of course). We started the day off strong topping our group. We played TCD2, NUIG, Pick – UP and DCU. We learned loads and improved our zone in these games. After a tough group stage we had a quick lunch break.

UCC 13 – 0 TCD 2
UCC 12 – 2 NUIG
UCC 13 – 0 PICK – UP
UCC 13 – 1 DCU

Over in the other group, UL, UCD, TCD 1, MU and DIT + Friends were all having the closest games Ladies Inter Varsities has ever seen. UCD and TCD came out as the top two. Setting up the semi finals as: UCC vs TCD 1 and UCD vs NUIG.

Holding first seeds gave us TCD 1 in the semi final. This game was highly spirited and intense. With a spot in the final up for grabs both teams were really giving it their all. Fortunately for us our experience stood to us and we came out on top 13 – 3. Thanks to Trinity for the great semi and well done on taking 3rd place.

After our long and intense semi final in the heat against TCD 1 we took a well deserved break. Having learned that NUIG would be playing us in the final we started our warm up as focused as ever. We knew they had improved a lot since the group game earlier in the day.

The time for the final had arrived. NUIG came out strong in their first ever IV’s final, after their impressive semi final win, scoring the first point of the game. UCC stepped up and finished the game out 13 – 4. The final was a hugely enjoyable and spirited game for both teams. Both UCC and NUIG were happy to be playing such high quality Ultimate in the sun. Thanks to NUIG for a great final, probably the best IVs final in recent years. It was a thoughly enjoyable day for all involved.
